Parish Priest
The Priest, as the spiritual father and shepherd, nurtures and directs the spiritual and communal life of our Church, working in harmony with the Parish Council and drawing strength from the devotion, support, and service of all who contribute to our Parish Community.
Vasileios G. Apostolidis was born in 1975 in Hamburg, Germany. He grew up in Thessaloniki, where he completed his elementary and secondary education studies.Then he went on to study Photography at the European Studies of Photography. After completing his eighteen-month military service, he worked as a teacher in photography workshops and schools. Moreover, he also worked as a special collaborator inthe16th Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities of Thessaloniki Region and the MOMus-Thessaloniki Museum of Photography. In 2000 Vasileios Apostolidis and Elisavet Pavlidou were joined in holy matrimony in the Holy Church of St. Marina in Ano Toumpa, Thessaloniki. They have a son, Nikolaos, born in 2003.
In 2002 he was ordained a Deacon, by His Eminence Metropolitan of Neapolis and Stavroupolis, Dionysios. He served as a Deacon in the Cathedral Church of St. John the Baptist until 2004 when he was ordained a Priest. From 2004 to 2012 he served as a Priest in the Holy Church of St. John the Theologian of Meteora, in Thessaloniki, and was in charge of the Parish’s Youth Council, the Sunday School, and the Anti-cult Group. In 2009 he was given the award-officium of ”Oikonomos” by His Eminence, Metropolitan of Neapolis and Stavroupolis, Varnavas. In 2012 he was voluntarily transferred to The Holy Metropolis of Edessa, Pella, and Almopia and was appointed Head Priest of the Holy Church of St. Athanasios in Apsalos (Presbytera Elisavet’s parentage) which he serves until 2023. In 2014 he was given the award-officium of ”Protopresbyter” and in addition was given the award-officium of ”Pneumatikos” by His Eminence Metropolitan of Edessa, Pella, and Almopia, Joel.Since 2023, he belongs to the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America and serves as the Head Priest (Proistamenos) at the Greek Orthodox Church of Holy Trinity-Saint Nicholas in Staten Island, New York.
In 2006 he graduated with a Professor’s Degreein Byzantine Music with an excellent grade, from the School of Byzantine Music of Pieria “Saint Dionysios of Olympus”, his Professor being Mr. Ioannis Papachronis. Furthermore, he is a graduate of the Department of Hierarchical and Theological Studies at the University Ecclesiastical Academy of Thessaloniki, with an excellent degree and he is also a graduate of the Department of Postgraduate Training in Ecclesiastical Byzantine Music of The Athens Conservatoire. In 2013 he received a Postgraduate Diploma with honors in the Orthodox Ecclesiastical Music-Choir Conduct, from the Academy of Music and Fine Arts in Plovdiv. On December 18th, 2019, during the General Assembly of the Department of Music Science and Art of the University of Macedonia, his Professor being Fr. Nektarios Paris, he was awarded a Ph.Doctorate with honors. In the same year, on the premises of the Historical Archive of Macedonia – General Archives of the State (Hellenic Republic), he held an original exhibition of photographs and archival material on the subject of ”Protopsaltis Chrysanthos Theodosopoulos (1920-1988)”. He is fluent in English and computer literate (MS Office, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, In Design, Premiere, and Corel Draw).
Since 2006 he has been engaged in the research, study, and teaching of Byzantine Music and participates as a choir member in the Byzantine Choir “Joasaf the Dionysian” of Serres. He participated in the recording of three digital discs, in 2010 on the album ”Parakletikos Kanon to Saint Ephraim of Syros” in the Holy Monastery of St. Ephraim Kontariotissain Katerini, and in 2010 on the album ”Ethomites Saints” produced by the Greek Μusic Αrchive and then in 2014 on the album ”Kanon Parakletikos of Saint George” published by the Epektasis Editions. During the years 2014 – 2024, in the context of the dissemination and preservation of Byzantine Music, in line with his academic identity, he participated as a lecturer in International Interdisciplinary Conferences of Byzantine and Musicological Studies in Greece and abroad.
In 2010 he was appointed as a Teacher of Byzantine Musicand taught the students of the State-recognized School ”Saint Dionysios of Olympus” of the Holy Metropolis of Kitros, Katerini, and Platamonfrom 2010-2015. In the year 2015, he was appointed Professor of Byzantine Music, according to the decision of the Ministry of Culture, Education and Religious, and taught at the above-mentioned school as a supervisor of Diploma Thesis in Byzantine Music. As Professor of Byzantine Music, he participated in the years 2015 – 2021 as a member of the examination committees for the granting of diplomas (Degrees and Diplomas in Byzantine Music) at the State-recognized School of Byzantine Music ”Saint Ioannis of Damascus” of the Holy Metropolis of Thessaliotis and Fanariofersala, as defined by the decisions of the Ministry of Culture. Since 2020 he has been teaching the lessons of Byzantine Music at the University Ecclesiastical Academy of Thessaloniki, as a Visiting Professor.
In the context of the above activities, he carried out the following Monographs – Thesis:
- Contribution to the History of the Holy Monastery of the Holy Trinity in the Holy Spirit of Serres, Thessaloniki, 2008 – Bachelor Thesis.
- The lyric ”Oti Sotira etekes” from Petros Bereketi’s Octoechos “Theotoke Parthene”,Thessaloniki, 2009 – Comparative study.
- The Heirmos and the Katavasia in the first Ode of the Canon of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, Thessaloniki, 2009 – Palaeographical study.
- The use of the grave accent ”Vareia” in Petros Lampadarios’ book ”Doxastika 1821”, Thessaloniki, 2010.
- The Musical phrase of the Dogmatic Theotokia of the Cromatical genus of the ”New Anastasimatarion”, Thessaloniki, 2013 – Master’s Degree Thesis.
- Protopsaltis Chrysanthos Theodosopoulos (1920-1988): contribution to the history, interpretation, and performance of church music in Thessaloniki during the second half of the 20th century, Thessaloniki, 2019 – PhD Thesis.
